The Tool Kit to address issues of Quality Assurance
and Livestock Show Ethics - (1998) National Livestock
Ethics Council
This tool kit is designed in a two-prong approach
to address these issues. The first prong of the effort
is centered around 5 Quality Assurance points: 1)
proper injection sites, 2) proper facilities, 3) proper
nutrition, 4) reading & following label directions
of animal health products, and 5) proper handling
& care of livestock. Educational materials in
the tool kit to support the quality assurance effort
include the "Quality Assurance: Strengthening
the Chain of Wholesome Food Production" video
and guide produced by Jeff Goodwin, and the Quality
Assurance Website on a CD produced by Western Fairs
Association. The second prong of the effort is directed
at making the "right " choice about livestock
showing practices (livestock show ethics). The five
points made on the ethics education side of this effort
are 1) Does the practice violate FDA law? 2) Does
the practice fraudulently misrepresent the animal?
3) Does the practice compromise the welfare of the
animal? 4) Does the practice have anything to do with
real world agriculture?, and 5) Will the public stand
for it? Educational materials to support the ethics
education component of the tool kit include the "Line
in the Sand" video and guide, and an interactive
computer program entitled "Learning Ethics at
the Fair." This tool kit is available for $150.00
for subscribers of the National Livestock Ethics Council
($180.00 for non-subscribers). Contact National Livestock
Ethics Council, 1910 Lyda Drive, Bowling Green Kentucky

4-H Market Livestock Evaluation System (1997) University
of Idaho
This
32 page educational package is the prime source of
reference regarding the "Systems Approach"
of youth livestock project evaluation. The Systems
Approach is currently in use in Idaho and is spreading
to several other states across the nation. An evaluation
card is the heart of the system providing an individual
animal evaluation based on six livestock industry
standards. Evaluation criteria such as average daily
gain, lean yield, and quality grade are just some
of the industry standards which determine the animals
placing in the class. The very nature of the Systems
Approach eliminates many of the ethics and quality
assurance problems of the traditional livestock show-
without a long list of rules. This 32 page color educational
package includes a computer ration program for beef
and sheep, sample judging cards, and various handout
material to share this concept with others. Available
for $10.00 from University of Idaho, Ag Publications,
Moscow, Idaho 83844-2240, Phone (208) 885-7982, FAX
